A short drive North on Highway 101 from the many scenic beach cities located on the Central Coast of California is what locals know as the North County. Located approximately 25 miles inland and separated from the beautiful Pacific coastline by a ridge of mountains known as “The Grade’, the North County is the virtual opposite of it’s coastal sisters.
Here, in the cities of Atascadero, Paso Robles, and Templeton, the winters are cooler and the summers are warmer. The lifestyle, too, is vastly different. In the higher elevation and drier climate you’ll find cowboys, Arabian horse farms, vineyards, award-winning wineries and crystal-blue lakes.
The area is a diverse tapestry of times gone by. Much of the old-west architecture is reminiscent of the days of Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp. Yet the Victorian-style homes that line Vine Street in Paso Robles couldn’t be any different… especially during the festive holiday season. The area is also home to Lake Nacimiento. Paso Robles alone boasts over 50 world class wineries, several golf courses, hot springs and a host of horse stables. It is also the home of California’s annual Mid-State Fair, during which time the city nearly bursts from the throngs of visitors who come from near and far for 2 weeks of competitions, carnival rides, rodeo excitement and top-rate international performers.
